Ox - Yea, I've watched a little of YT, must admit I had forgotten how funny and dry he was.

After the game on Sunday, I watched about half a dozen You Tubed Saint & Greavsie episodes.

He really was the master of getting a message across without actually saying it. If you are not so sure about that, listen out for the crew frequently losing it and laughing off screen, or the Saint trying not to corpse after one of his "innocent" comments on a given subject.

Manual's quite correct - it would probably not work now but, boy do we need someone on screen well versed in the art of insulting without insulting to counter all this wishy-washy woke bollocks that has invaded the lives of us all.

Saint & Greavsie really was a legendary show. Not so sure it would work these days though. Funny clip here.

I remember going to see him once at a gig on the after dinner circuit that so many footballers of his generation used to do. Very entertaining and would make time and speak to anyone and sign whatever. Too young to see him play in person. My Nan used to teach his kids in infant school way back when and they would always get a Christmas card from him. Seemed like a nice bloke all round.

Saint and Greavsie was a huge part of my childhood. Great player, great guy, overcame adversity and an illness that has finished countless others.

RIP Jim

I watched that Maine Road debut on YouTube today. Greavsie got two, Hurst got two, and Boycie (Ronnie, not John Challis) scored a volley straight back from Joe Corrigan’s kick.

The pitch was a mud bath.

Proper football.

RIP Jim.

I remember the old man taking me up to Maine Road to see his 4 goal debut for us.

Will the march of time please stop!
He may have been past his best when he came to West Ham, but still managed 11 goals during the 1970-71 season.
He best victory was overcoming alcoholism.
Coincidence that today Spurs play Chelsea?
On YouTube there is a good retro channel "heavy roller" which has highlights from the 50s and early sixties, some games feature Jimmy Greaves playing for Chelsea/Spurs worth a good look,

Knock on his door as a kid late 60's when he lived down the mount (Green way?) just behind the station, his wife opened the door said he wasn't in but to come back the next day so we did.

He was in his the front garden and we just called him over got our books signed and walked away singing ''Jimmy for England '' due to some newspaper pushing his recall at the time.

I really hope he gets a minutes silence at our game today - a minutes applause just wouldn't do him justice.

Will it happen?

I seriously doubt it - local piss-heads having to have their say because buying a ticket gives them that entitlement and a Manc crowd who have no connection with him will ensure a clap wins out.

RIP Jimmy. I've got memories of him when he was having a hard time with alcoholism. I worked at the hospital that was treating him. Always polite and would answer your questions. One particular event that I remember very well was that he went missing and was only found the next morning slumped over the steering wheel of a car. Not sure if it was his car or borrowed.
